What’s That Smell: Getting Rid of Lingering Odors

There is nothing worse than discovering a foul scent coming from somewhere in your house. There are plenty of things in your home that can contribute to lingering odors no matter how clean you are. Looking at some of the most common sources of unpleasant smells, we want to review a few ways you can improve the situation. Here are some things to look at if you’re concerned about odors.

Clean the Carpets

Vacuuming is essential, but it can only do so much. It does help get rid of dirt and bacteria, but things settle in carpets over time. To eliminate significant odors, such as mildew caused by water damage or the smell of pet stains, you need to break out the big guns. You can clean your carpets yourself, but sometimes it pays to bring in the professionals.

Service the Garbage Disposal

When you have a garbage disposal, things are kind of “out of sight, out of mind.” Did you know some of those awful odors in your kitchen can come from your sink and not your trash? There are several ways to clean your garbage disposal, and some of them are a little creative.

  1. Ice: it not only helps with odors but sharpens the blades.
  2. Citrus: cut up a lemon into small wedges and run them down the disposal.
  3. Vinegar and baking soda: turn on your disposal, throw in a cup of baking soda, and chase it with a cup of distilled white vinegar.

If all else fails, it may be time to call in a plumber to help you out.

Clean Stains

Stains can come in all shapes and sizes. It might be an accident from a pet or the remnants of a fun party. Whatever the cause, stains can end up raising a stink in your house. Knowing how to remove a stain can help get rid of nasty odors. Vinegar and baking soda are still a great go-to. Or you can get an enzymatic cleaner, like Nature’s Miracle, and give it a try.

Check for Mold or Mildew

Sometimes the odors in your house are coming from places you can’t see. Mold in walls or mildew around your windows can contribute to smalls in your home. If the mold or mildew is visible, you can clean it with good old-fashioned bleach. If the issue is deeper than surface level, it could be time to call in a remediation crew as mold can cause a series of severe health problems for you and your family.
