Spring Seasonal Produce

There is nothing like fresh fruits and vegetables in season. Georgia has a fantastic spring harvest, so finding the perfect produce is a great way to eat healthy and delicious food.  If you want to know what’s in season this spring, take a look at our spring produce guide below, along with some safe ways to buy fresh fruits and vegetables in Atlanta and the surrounding cities.

Asparagus

Asparagus doesn’t always get the love it deserves, but this veggie is intensely versatile. You can roast them, blanch them, sauté them, or slice them thin and eat them raw in a salad. They are great mixed with roasted potatoes as a hash or with pasta and a light lemon sauce. They’re in season through June in Atlanta.

Beets

It seems that beets are equally divisive, but for fans of this earthy root vegetable, you can get plenty of beets through May. While root veggies are often associated with fall flavors, beets really shine in the spring. You can roast them to perfection, pickle them, or slice thin and eat raw. Try a beet carpaccio with goat cheese and honey as a divine springtime treat.

Plums

If sweet fruit is more your speed, plums are in season in the spring as well. Plums are juicy, delicious stone fruit that are great to eat freshly picked. Or you can slice them up in a savory salad or bake them into a pie or cobbler. You can buy fresh, in-season plums from May through July.

Peaches

We couldn’t talk about fresh produce in Atlanta without mentioning fresh Georgia peaches. Seasonal peaches have a relatively short window, so be sure to get your hand on them as soon as you see them out and about at the farmer’s markets. If you want a fresh take on peaches, slice them then and toss them in a spring green salad with feta cheese, chopped pecans, thinly sliced red onion, and a light vinaigrette dressing.

Local Farmer’s Markets

The best place to get the freshest produce throughout the spring is through your local farmer’s markets. Supporting local growers helps make our community thrive. Here are a few farmer’s markets with good COVID-19 safety measures in place:

  • Decatur: Wednesdays in the summer at the First Baptist Church on Clairmont
  • Freedom: Year-round Saturdays at the Carter Center Library
  • Grant Park: Sundays year-round at Eventide Brewing
  • Brookhaven: Saturdays on Fernwood Circle
  • Lilburn: Fridays in the summer at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church or order online.
  • Tucker: A fully online marketplace with pick-ups on Thursdays at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church
