5 Amazing getaways within 2 hours of atlanta

Atlanta has the distinction of being one of the largest cities in the southeast. Whether you’re in the middle of the bustling city or any of the surrounding suburbs, you may occasionally feel like you need to get away. The best part of living in Atlanta is its proximity to other incredible places to visit. If you want to check out somewhere relaxing within 2 hours of Atlanta, we have a list to get you inspired.

Chattanooga

When you think about Chattanooga, you may think of only one thing: The Chattanooga Choo Choo. You’re in luck, the famous train was turned into a hotel, and you can even stay in the historic train cars. But that’s not all you can do in this small Tennessee town just under two hours from Atlanta. Visit the Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain, and Ruby Falls while you’re there.

Pine Mountain

An hour and ten minutes southwest of Atlanta is Pine Mountain, home to Callaway Gardens, a spectacular scenic park. The Pine Mountain Trail is also a worthwhile visit, as is the F.D. Roosevelt Park, where FDR would host famous cookouts. Pine Mountain is also home to the Wild Animal Safari, a zoo where you can see animals up close from the comfort of your car.

Lake Oconee

If you travel east from Atlanta, you’ll arrive in Lake Oconee, a large-scale reservoir lake with all the attractions you would find on the water. There’s a Ritz Carlton in the area where you can pamper yourself with a spa day. Or you can rent a boat and head out onto the water. And if you love golf, there are several world-class courses nearby.

Helen

If you’re looking for something a little more whimsical, consider heading to North Georgia and the tiny enclave of Helen. The village is a recreation of an Alpine town complete with the iconic architecture of the German region. Hike in the nearby areas like Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls or spend an afternoon in the town’s beer hall and visiting local shops.

Tallulah Gorge

Also north of the city, you may not want to miss the famous Tallulah Gorge. You can hike the Tallulah Falls State Park or visit the scenic overlook to see where the Flying Wallendas crossed the gorge in 1970. You probably don’t want to miss one of the most unique attractions in nearby Tiger called Goats on the Roof, a delightful village of shops where goats do indeed live on the Roof.
