5 COVID-Safe Things to do in Georgia This Summer

Even as Georgia is opening up after the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s still a good idea to stay cautious. That’s especially true with the spread of the Delta Variant. What can you do in Georgia this summer to maintain good social distancing and stay outdoors as much as possible? Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

Explore Atlanta’s Historic Cemeteries

Oakland Cemetery, located less than a mile from the heart of downtown Atlanta, is the oldest public park and a big part of the city’s history. It’s perfect for an afternoon outdoors with 48 acres to explore. The cemetery is a perfectly manicured garden and the final resting place of many notable people from Atlanta’s history.

Catch a Movie at the Drive-In

Originally built in 1947 and located off Moreland near the Chestnut Hill Cemetary, The Starlight Drive-In Theater is an unmissable piece of Atlanta history. The drive-In has current COVID-19 safety protocol in place to help moviegoers stay safe and healthy. Prices are affordable; movies cost only $10 for anyone ten and over and just $1 for younger children.

Go Fruit Picking in North Georgia

Throughout North Georgia, you’ll find plenty of U-Pick farms where you can spend a day picking fresh fruit to enjoy at home with your family. It’s easy to stay distanced from others and safe while you stroll through the fruit trees or bushes. Cherries and blueberries will be in season throughout the summer, and don’t forget the fun of apple and pumpkin picking in the fall.

Paddle the Chattahoochee River

If you want a relaxing day on the river, consider paddling on the Chattahoochee. There are several ways to spend an afternoon floating down the river. There are kayak, canoe, and tube rental companies setting up shop from the headwaters in Helen, Georgia, down into the northern suburbs of Atlanta.

Hike a Portion of the Appalachian Trail

If you want to be outdoors but not on the river, consider hiking the first portion of the famed Appalachian Trail. The first 76 miles of the 14 state trail starts in north Georgia. The trail begins at Springer Mountain near Amicalola, and there are plenty of easy hiking trails around the area to enjoy a day out by yourself or with your family.
